More About: SnJ Spray Metal

SnJ Spray Metal Paints

“SnJ Spray Metal paint and polishing powder produces a realistic metal look when airbrushed on plastic with the least amount of preparatory work. I can use any of the standard masking materials on it without a sealer. The best feature of SnJ is that it is so simple to use; and, it is fast.” Al Jones – Milwaukee, WI

SnJ is Enamel Based – Not Lacquer

SnJ Spray Metal paint is enamel based, meaning that it will never attack your plastic. That can’t be said for laquer paints, which generally require a protective primer coat before use. Just look how easy it is to apply:

SnJ Spray Metal Can Be Tinted!

To create more colors…use gloss enamel paints to create tonal effects of other metals. Using our Aluminum as the base color…

STEEL: 3 drops gloss black, 1 drop dark blue mixed with 1/2 oz (one half bottle) of Spray Metal.

TITANIUM: 2 drops gloss black, 2 drops dark brown, 1 drop orange mixed with 1/2 oz of Spray Metal.

SnJ Manufactured by Hawkeye’s Hobbies

SnJ Model Products was acquired by Hawkeye’s Hobbies in July of 2006. The line of SnJ Spray Metals and Polishing Powders are now produced exclusively by Hawkeye’s Hobbies LLC in Neenah, Wisconsin, USA.

SnJ Spray Metal Colors

Since the acquisition, the four basic natural metal finish (NMF) colors have been expanded to twelve. Those being: Aluminum, Bronze, Copper, Gold, Pewter, Bronzed Aluminum, Silver and Red Anodized Aluminum. We’ve also introduced our first non-NMF color Fluorescent Red-Orange. This color was a natural choice since many of the early NMF scheme aircraft included high visibility markings. Each bottle contains approximately 1 ounce/30 ml.

Using SnJ Spray Metal

SnJ Spray Metals are easy to apply, nearly fool proof. Buffing the finish with Hawkeye’s Polishing Powders is not required to achieve a realistic natural metal finish, but buffing will increase your options for sheen and tone.

It’s all in the prep work! Spending extra time preparing the model to receive paint pays dividends at the end. Be sure to wash and remove any oily residue from the model. Surfaces to be painted need to be free of all blemishes and imperfections. A primer is not required; SnJ will cover putties and other fillers.

Since you’re applying real metal, any imperfections discovered can be corrected and repainted without issue.

You can use either a gravity fed or siphon feed airbrush.

Several thin coats are better than one heavy coat. Misting in light layers, usually three to four, will provide total coverage. You may need more; just don’t over do it. Allow 8 – 14 minutes between coats. Time needed between coats will vary some due to temperature and humidity levels at the time of application.

SnJ Spray Metal dries to a natural metal semi-gloss finish. Applying more will not give the finish a glossy or wet look; it will only cause a glazed texture. We suggest that you allow an hour to air dry before handling, masking or applying other colors or decals.

If you plan to polish the finish using our SnJ Polishing Powders, simply mask the area you want to polish. We recommend you wear dust protection mask when using Polishing Powders. Polishing Powder can be applied with a cotton swab or a make-up sponge. Lightly dab either one into the powder and work the powder into the surface gently. Continue working until the desired level of sheen is reached. Dab off excess with a damp tissue, then inspect and continue polishing if needed. Work in small sections; allow four hours for the finish to cure before moving onto other areas.

Decals: Apply decals as you normally would. Popular solutions have no effect on the finish. To get a flat finish on your decals apply your favorite flat clear coat.

No sealer coat is needed or recommended. However, if your model is going to be handled and you want to avoid fingerprints, you can clear coat the model. Fingerprints can otherwise be polished away with a soft cloth. Clear coats will alter the appearance of the finish. Experiment on a spare part first before you cover your model, just to be on the safe side.
