AirVenture 2009-Day 2

by Gerald Voigt
July 28th, 2009

a380pylon1comflt1Today’s weather was perfect! Nice and sunny with low humidity…is this July in Wisconsin?

We got a rather late start this morning. Roy’s flight arrived rather late, or early depending on your perspective.  The severe weather we experienced here was also being experienced elsewhere which delayed his flight arrival until 1 AM. Managed to get about four hours sleep before spending more than 12 on the grounds today.

Had the privilege to interview Robert Harder a B-52D Navigator Bombardier who wrote the book “Flying From the Black Hole.”

t28heritage4shipThe A380 put on an impressive show upon its arrival. It was so quiet! The slow flight pass followed by a high AOA climb was simply unbelievable. This was a consumer confidence builder for sure.

AirVenture 2009 Day One

by Gerald Voigt
July 27th, 2009

waterdumptbird8Today can be best described as soggy. Though the morning and early afternoon were dry, the sky was overcast most of the time. Then came the rain and a lot of it. So much for sticking around for the Doobie Brothers concert…I was soaked, tired and quickly approaching the need for a warm shower and something to eat…so I left…sort of…stuck in traffic for better part of an hour. Seems the traffic control gurus didn’t want to initiate the reverse flow plan. Oh well I made it home safe, that’s all that matters.

p1240562ep1240564eThe Warbird ramp was sparsely populated, but that started to change as more arrived as the day progressed. It was also interesting to note all of the changes that have taken place since last year. Buildings have been relocated, some of the temporary ones are now more permanent and the of course some are gone completely. The old control tower really taxes one who came to rely on it as a reference as well as a meeting point. I felt sort of out a place without it.
