One Step At A Time

by Gerald Voigt
May 1st, 2012

Whether you are building a scale model, starting a business or hosting a radio program you must take one step at a time to get to and reach the results you desire. Several listeners and fellow modelers have asked or suggested that The Plastic Scale Modeling Hour become a television program or an online streaming video program.

I do have plans on expanding the format to include simulcasting live streaming video or producing a webinar for those episodes or segments of the show that the audience would definitely benefit having a visual presentation and reference. If you ever built a Tamiya F-16, you know that the assembly steps are very specific. Jumping ahead and doing things out of that sequence can have serious consequences…like installing the main gear before you were suppose to, something I learned firsthand!

There is a point in the process of building a scale model or developing a program when its appropriate to include those extras that really kick up the finished product. In scale modeling its aftermarket bits. You have to source these parts as well as the tools to work them into the build, same applies to including a video format to the show. Adding such things requires something many modelers are keenly aware of…cost.

As with any project, scale modeling, a business or radio program it takes funds to make it happen. Sponsorship and advertising go to pay for those things and we have some interested parties we are hoping to secure. We’ll soon be airing our 25th episode, which establishes us as being serious, so I am hoping these interested parties sign on soon to support the show.

When it comes to being face to face with my guests, I’d love nothing more than be able to travel around the world to where they are located to produce such episodes. It is something I hope to do when and where it is possible.  I’ll be starting here in the US & Canada, such as an event in Madison, Wisconsin this coming weekend the IPMS-Mad City Modelers Show where I hope to record interviews and discussions.

Given I’ve had guests on the show from England (UK) to Australia and points in between, think of the frequent flier miles I could have racked up! More importantly the costs associated with traveling to all of those locations. If I had the resources to do so, you bet I would! During the previous we’ve discussed what makes an award winning model, mastering each step and maintaining consistency throughout the process. I’m taking one step at a time to get to the results not only I want, but what you want to see.

Thanks to all of those who have been my guests as well as those who have supported the show with donations! Couldn’t have done it without you!

Scratchbuilding

by Gerald Voigt
April 25th, 2012

Today we have a vast array of aftermarket parts, decals and accessories to help us add a greater level of detail to our scale modeling projects. Some of these manufacturers also offer us some very unique parts to modify and or provide stand alone subjects to accompany our projects. One such company which I have mentioned here on the Squawkbox before is Belcher Bits.

Michael Belcher is a scale modeler who loves scratchbuilding what doesn’t exist. His efforts were admired and sought after by other modelers who saw his workmanship. So he decided to start sharing his efforts by selling them at a local venue. Since 1994 Belcher Bits has grown its sales from local, regional, national to international reach.

Michael resides near Ottawa, Canada so it goes without saying that many of the subjects which he scratchbuilds or creates are those which the Canadian military used or are using. His resin sets and decals are first class!

This week I interview Michael on The Plastic Scale Modeling Hour, so you’ll have a chance to learn more about the modeler and his passions for the hobby.

Tune in! Visit Belcher Bits today to see all of the great products they offer!

Ask And Get Answers

by Gerald Voigt
March 7th, 2012

Most of us scale modelers have tons of questions to ask about building scale models. We are eager to pick the brain of a modeler whose work we find interesting as well as inspiring. Sometimes having access isn’t possible or the barriers of distance and language impede it from occurring. Well I am working to change that.

I try to have a variety of topics and guest on The Plastic Scale Modeling Hour to answer those questions of those you so want to ask. Indulge me for a moment while I share with you some of the topics and guests coming up in the near future.

A few episodes ago I had a hobby store owner on the show, we discussed the challenges he faced to operate his business. This sparked emails from listeners who wanted to know more about starting a hobby retail business, so we’re going to give you the opportunity to submit your questions, ask them live on the air.

Hal Miller of Model Retailer Magazine returns next week with a panel of guests to share with you some of the things you need to know BEFORE you make your decision to step into the retail hobby arena. Representatives from a major distributor, franchise and hobby retailer association will join Hal and myself to provide inspiring entrepreneurs with the much needed FACTS about starting a hobby shop. Whether virtual (internet) or brick and mortar.

Vladimir Sulc, President of Eduard Model Accessories will be joining me on May 3rd, to discuss the niche market of aftermarket and limited run kits. We’ve seen a lot of product improvements and variety since this segment of the hobby got started in the early 90′s.

The owners of smaller cottage manufacturers such as Barracuda Studios, Belcher Bits and Draw Decal will be joining me as well. So be sure to keep apprised of the schedule to see when.

We’ll also chat with hosts of your favorite internet modeling forums, if they’re willing. Such as Brett Green of Hyperscale.

The International Plastic Modelers Society has sanctioned events around the world. Representatives from these events are encourage to be on the show to promote their events. I have also confirmed with IPMS-USA that members of the eBoard will be joining me to talk about the Society, its history and what the future has in store.

I know many of you listen to the program in its podcast form or as a live stream playback from the Warbird Radio site, so you are not able to call in during the LIVE broadcast. So I encourage you to write in with your questions so I can ask them and get answers to them. Its easy just drop me a line at mailbag@theplasticscalemodelinghour.com  or mailbag@hawkeyes-squawkbox.com
