Modeling Tip: Hold That Model III

By Gerald Voigt

foamcradleNext time you’re either at your favorite craft store or pass by a fabric store stop in an take a look at the selection of foam they carry. Foam used for seat cushions and padding. As I have mentioned previously this material is great for masking open wheel wells, cockpits and intakes to protect them while painting exterior areas.

I’ll sometimes use it to make a cradle to hold the model I am working on. Using several pieces cut in differing sizes I can support the model while I attach small parts, apply decals, hand paint small details and even apply weathering. The various layers or pieces can be held together with toothpicks. This allows you to easily reconfigure the pieces as needed. Just be sure to push the toothpicks down so they don’t protrude and scratch at your model or stick you while working.
