How To Skin A Raptor – Paint Testing

04082_cockpit_1raptorpainttestEven before the Academy 1:48 F-22 Raptor hit the shelves there were discussion on how to best achieve the metallic tone in the Raptor’s low-vis paint scheme. Well my first experiments have delivered some very satisfactory results. The mixture formulation being tested looks great, I am going to experiment using some other colors to get the tone effects found on the underside. The subtle metallic reflectivity is there, now to find the color that best matches the Raptor’s.

My model has been finished using flat paints, it is show here after the application of the base coat with no weathering or detailing of any kind. Again I’ve gotten the metallic sheen mixture right, now to tweak the color then it will receive a “special” paint scheme.

I need a day of sunshine to best photo my test model to best compare it with the reference photos…unfortunately we’ve got a couple days of rain. Thanks again to Steve Williams for his Raptor images from AirVenture 2008, they have been most useful.

What is the best primer for resin parts. I just was working on an H-43 seat and while sanding the casting block off all the acrylic paint came off. I use Tamia primer and cleaned the part with warm soapy water before paint.

    What do you suggest?

    Thanking you in advance

You’re going to need to use something like lacquer thinner to clean your resin parts before painting. Soap and water is fine for styrene but not resin. Use a flat color as a primer. You might even try using Future as your pre-primer, then move on to a flat sheen paint.

Any ideas where I might find the military names of the colors used to paint F-22′s delivered to various bases with as much detail as possible about what sectionor areas are what color. I am building a 1/32 scale plastic model and wan to paint as realistically as possible.

There are several forums to pose such a question. You might want to see if someone will scan the instructions of the 1:48 Academy F-22 and email them to you to use the paint instructions as a guide. We’re working on a paint especially formulated for the F-22 & F-35 called Raptor Sheen. Unfortunately we’re a little ways away from starting production. Trying to get it “just right” before we do.

    OK, thanks Gerald

About when would the Raptor Sheen paint be coming out in the market? There is another F-22 kit coming out in 1/48 from Hasegawa sometime during this quarter (2010).

I had to let is set on the back burner of late, had to concentrate on other projects. The second round of field testing should begin soon.
