Tracking Arrivals to EAA AirVenture

By Gerald Voigt

With EAA AirVenture 2008 just around the corner I want to share a way for those armchair aviators a way to have a little fun watching what is arriving at Oshkosh for the show. Many of the arrivals file IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) Flight Plans to Oshkosh (KOSH). You can track these arrivals by visiting http://flightaware.com/. You may have to register to access the site but that isn’t difficult.

Once you can access the page, in the lower left corner is a place to enter the airport code and a button to click to view the activity (just data) at the airport. Type in KOSH and click…then you’ll be able to see who’s coming and going. It also gives you a sample of the radar image of the airport (IFR aircraft only).

It is interesting to see what type aircraft, who owns it, where it started from along with other information about the aircraft and airport. I use this site when family and friends are flying to see where they are enroute…especially if I have to venture to the airport to pick them up. Keeps my waiting time to a minimum.

So if you can’t be there in person, check out http://flightaware.com/ and http://airventure.org/ for the latest news and information about AirVenture 2008. I will be posting pictures I take daily here in my blog too!
