For most of us we have our preferences as to what subjects and categories we choose to model. I tend to lean towards aircraft subjects, others prefer cars & trucks, while yet others love armor or ships. These are what some would call mainstream modeling, yet there are other subjects too. Such as figures, science-fiction, architectural and railroading.
Many of these subjects cross categories, figures can be used with aircraft, armor and automotive. Architectural models lend themselves not only with model railroading but armor as well. A fellow modeler of our IPMS chapter is Roger Witt. Roger is one of those guys that when he shares one of his projects you sit and stare in amazement. Even if he says it was a “rush job” and just not to “his normal standard.” I hope I reach the level of quality of his “rush job”, I’d be considered a master builder by my peers.
Roger’s interests include railroad, aircraft and automotive. He has a nice collection of each and all are what I consider masterpieces in their own right. His workshop is large which gives him the ability to make fine wooden furniture as well as scale models and have room for a nice railroad layout. What we toil with, Roger whips out on his computer to begin machining the parts on his CNC equipment.
One of his latest pieces is a Filling Station build in “O” gauge or 1:48 to put it in general modeling scale terms. This model was a consignment build for a customer who has an extensive layout. No matter where you look Roger has captured so much in such a small scale. He scratch built everything but the gas pumps and the window casements.

Some of the other projects he’s shared with us at our model club meetings as well as area events are a GeeBee Racer complete with a figure of Jimmy Doolittle! To show his variety in interests, he will routine bring models from a couple of categories, like a couple of other racers…a Corsair and a Ferrari.
He also builds subjects of various media…such as resin, which he refers to the lesser quality kits as “bars of soap” yet turns them into stunning replicas. Regardless of the subject, anything Roger builds is simply OUTSTANDING!
If you’d like to learn more about Roger and his work, or are interesting in commissioning him as a builder drop me a note, I’ll be sure to pass it along to him.

Very nice little writeup! I hope Roger likes it!
